Ryan Murphy’s new seriesLove Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessettedives into one of the most famous romances of the 1990s — but the show doesn’t tell the entire story.

The first installment of theLove Storyanthology dramatizes the relationship between John F. Kennedy Jr., played by Paul Anthony Kelly, and Calvin Klein publicist Carolyn Bessette, played by Sarah Pidgeon. The show follows their high-profile romance as they navigate intense media attention, family pressure and life in the public eye.

But while the show is based on real events, several key details about the couple’s relationship were simplified, condensed, or left out entirely.

‘Love Story: JFK Jr. & Carolyn Bessette’ Simplifies Their First Meeting

In the series, John and Carolyn meet at a fundraiser for the Amazon rainforest and quickly spark a connection. After Carolyn declines to give him her phone number, John later shows up at Calvin Klein to ask her out.

In real life, their early interactions were more complicated.

According to friends, Carolyn initially wasn’t impressed with John and didn’t believe he was serious about dating her.

“She didn’t think he was serious, one friend recalled to People in 2014.He couldn’t believe she turned him down. It had never happened before.”

John reportedly continued visiting the Calvin Klein showroom for additional meetings and fittings just to see Carolyn — something the series only briefly portrays.

Daryl Hannah’s Role Was Much Bigger

The show features John’s on-again, off-again relationship with actress Daryl Hannah, but the timeline is heavily condensed.

In reality, the two dated for nearly five years, from 1989 to 1994, and their relationship overlapped with John’s growing connection to Carolyn.

Author Christina Beller wrote in her book, “Once Upon a Time: The Captivating Life of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy,” which inspired the show, that John and Carolyn had already developed a strong bond before his final breakup with Hannah.

Even the show’s producers acknowledged they simplified the timeline.

“In reality, they were on again, off again, a little bit more than we had time to do in the show, executive producer Brad Simpson told USA Today.

‘Love Story: JFK Jr. & Carolyn Bessette’ Leaves Out Carole Radziwill

One surprising omission from the series isReal Housewives of New York Cityalum Carole Radziwill.

Carole was married to Anthony Radziwill, John’s cousin and best man at his 1996 wedding to Carolyn. Despite her proximity to the Kennedy family, she doesn’t appear in the series.

Sources told journalist Rob Shuter that the decision was intentional.

“This story is about John and Carolyn, one source said.Carole was adjacent, not central.”

Still, the absence may raise eyebrows among Bravo fans familiar with Carole’s connection to the Kennedys.

John and Carolyn May Have Been Dating Earlier

In the show, John and Carolyn remain friends until after Jackie Kennedy’s death in 1994.

However, some friends say the pair were romantically involved before that point.

Beller wrote that Carolyn reportedly became frustrated that John never introduced her to his famous mother.

“Carolyn became increasingly irked that he wouldn’t introduce her,Beller wrote.

John later told friends that not introducing the two women was one of his biggest regrets.

The Anonymous Letter Caused a Bigger Real-Life Breakup

One of the show’s dramatic plot points involves John receiving an anonymous letter accusing Carolyn of being a party girl and a social climber.

In the series, the conflict resolves fairly quickly.

But in reality, the letter reportedly caused a much bigger fallout.

According to Beller, John confronted Carolyn about the accusations at a Tribeca restaurant, leading to a messy breakup. Carolyn allegedly refused to speak to him for nearly a year and began dating model Michael Bergin.

Eventually, John convinced her to give their relationship another chance.

By 1995, their romance became public — cementing one of the most famous relationships of the decade.
