“Tell Me Lies” season 3 is basically here, which means it’s time to emotionally brace for another semester of bad choices at Baird College. If you remember season 2 perfectly, congrats — you’re stronger than the rest of us. But if your memory is more like “Wait… why does everyone hate each other again?” this recap is for you.

Season 2 had it all: messy hookups, bigger secrets, friendship blowups, and Stephen DeMarco acting like he’s allergic to basic decency. Lucy tried to move forward, Bree tried to protect her peace (lol), and basically everyone ended the season worse than they started.

Here are the biggest season 2 moments you actually need to remember before season 3 arrives.

Lucy and Stephen Tried to Stay Away… Then Immediately Didn’t

Season 2 started with Lucy Albright and Stephen keeping their distance. Everyone else was thrilled. Like, finally, maybe this campus could go five minutes without a Lucy/Stephen crisis.

Of course, that didn’t last.

Stephen was with Diana over the summer, but he never stopped watching Lucy from the sidelines. Lucy also tried to pretend she’d moved on, but it didn’t take long for her to realize she still wasn’t over him.

It wasn’t even romantic. It was more like… she couldn’t stop touching the stove, even though she knew she was going to get burned.

Diana Saw the Real Stephen — and Played It Smart

If anyone quietly “won” season 2, it was Diana. She figured out what Stephen was really doing: he was staying close because her dad’s connections could help his future.

Once she clocked that, she didn’t confront him directly — because, hello, Stephen is vindictive and weird. Instead, she played it smart.

Diana made Stephen believe she did badly on the LSAT and wasn’t as ambitious anymore. Basically, she made herself seem less useful to him.

And it worked. Stephen got the ick, drifted, and finally ended things — which is exactly what Diana wanted without having to fight him head-on.

‘Tell Me Lies’ Season 2: Lucy Panicked and Tried to Make Leo Happen Again

At one point Lucy and Stephen hooked up again, and Lucy immediately regretted it. Not because she suddenly grew morals — but because she knew getting pulled back in would destroy her.

So what did she do?

She ran right back to Leo, her boyfriend at the time, because he felt “safer.” And even though she wasn’t totally comfortable, she forced herself into intimacy with Leo like she had something to prove.

Stephen caught them together at the Christmas party and completely spiraled — but in a Stephen way, meaning: he didn’t freak out, he plotted.

Stephen Set Leo Up and Let Him Self-Destruct

Stephen basically nudged Leo off a cliff and then acted shocked when he fell.

He told Leo that Lucy had slept with him, and he knew exactly how Leo would respond. Leo had anger issues, and Stephen weaponized that.

Leo assaulted Stephen, and suddenly the whole situation flipped. Lucy felt bad for Stephen, and Leo looked like the scary guy she needed to get away from.

Stephen didn’t “win” Lucy with growth or maturity. He won her with manipulation and timing. Again.

Evan Confessed… and Stephen Started Collecting Ammo

Just when things were already messy, Evan decided to confess to Stephen that he cheated on Bree.

The big twist: Evan cheated with Lucy.

Stephen didn’t explode immediately (which honestly would’ve been less creepy). He stayed calm and filed it away for later.

Because that’s Stephen’s whole thing. He doesn’t forgive. He waits. And then he ruins your life when it matters most.

Bree and Evan Fell Apart, and Bree Fell Into an Affair

Bree and Evan broke up after the cheating confession. Bree stepped back to think — but her version of “thinking” was falling into a complicated, messy situation with Oliver.

Oliver was older, married, and had that calm, dangerous charm that immediately screams “bad idea.” Bree knew that. She still went there anyway.

At some point, Bree cut things off. But the bigger issue wasn’t Oliver. It was that Bree and Evan’s relationship was already cracked, and season 2 spent the rest of the time showing those cracks spreading.

‘Tell Me Lies’ Season 2 Ended With Stephen’s Most Cruel Move Yet

The 2015 timeline made it clear: Stephen never let the Evan/Lucy secret go.

At Bree and Evan’s wedding, Stephen played a recording of Evan admitting he cheated — and the worst part was how long he’d held onto it. He didn’t do it in the heat of the moment. He waited years to do maximum damage.

That was the moment that confirmed: Stephen doesn’t just cause chaos. He plans it.

Lydia Cut Lucy Off — and the Fallout Still Matters

Lucy’s friendship with Lydia also blew up when Lucy supported Pippa after Lydia’s brother, Chris, was accused of drugging and assaulting her.

Lydia chose her brother. Lucy chose Pippa. And that was basically the end.

But the real kicker is what we saw in the future timeline: Stephen and Lydia were together in 2015.

So now the question is… did Stephen genuinely end up with Lydia? Or did he do it because he knew it would hurt Lucy the most?

You already know the answer.

Pippa’s Trauma (and Lucy’s Big Mistake) Changed Everything

Pippa went through the darkest storyline of season 2. After the assault, she didn’t even want to talk about what happened, and it took her a long time to process it.

Then Lucy made a major mistake: she shared details of Pippa’s trauma during a disciplinary board conversation.

Lucy thought she was helping. But she crossed a line. It wasn’t Lucy’s story to share. Diana was furious, and Pippa’s trust in Lucy took a hit.

And honestly? That damage doesn’t just disappear because a new season starts.

The ‘Tell Me Lies’ Season 3 Problem: Stephen and Lucy Still Can’t Quit Each Other

The final punch in the gut? Stephen and Lucy hooked up again in 2015 — literally on the morning of Bree’s wedding.

Eight years later, they were still doing the same thing. Still drawn to each other. Still destructive.

So heading into season 3, the question isn’t “Will Stephen and Lucy be toxic again?”

It’s “How many people are they going to ruin this time?”

Because season 2 made one thing very clear: nobody in this world is safe when Stephen feels bored.
