The drama in “Tell Me Lies” can feel so intense that viewers often wonder if it’s ripped straight from real life.
The Hulu series, based on Carola Lovering’s 2018 bestselling novel, follows Lucy Albright and Stephen DeMarco through a toxic, years-long relationship that begins in college. Played by real-life couple Grace Van Patten and Jackson White, the characters’ messy dynamic has sparked plenty of conversation — especially after Jackson described Stephen as a “f—ing super villain.”
So is “Tell Me Lies” actually based on a true story? The answer is complicated.
Carola Lovering Says ‘Tell Me Lies’ Is Inspired by Real Life
While the show is not a direct retelling of true events, Carola has been open about the fact that the core relationship dynamic came from her own experience.
In a 2019 essay for The Cut, she revealed that Stephen was inspired by a former boyfriend she dated in college.
“I’m tired of pretending I don’t know the specific pain that comes from giving your heart to someone who was never really yours, someone who never actually asked for it in the first place,” Carola wrote. “It’s a pain that cuts deep, resurfacing in intense feelings of shame and worthlessness, and I’m done acting like it’s something I’m not intimately familiar with.”
She added, “I’m done pretending that I don’t have a Stephen DeMarco of my own.”
In a 2021 interview with blogger Morgan Marie, Carola further explained her motivation.
“I was inspired to write ‘Tell Me Lies‘ in the wake of a toxic relationship I experienced in college,” she said. “I had friends who’d also been in similar toxic situations with men, and I sensed it was something many women had been through but that wasn’t prevalently talked about.”
Carola clarified that while the emotional foundation is personal, the plot itself is fictional.
“Not that what happens in the book is real, but that it’s based on personal inspiration,” she told The Colorado College’s The Catalyst in 2022. “I also try to be honest with the fact that there’s so much in this book that’s not from my personal life.”
Stephen DeMarco Isn’t a Direct Copy of a Real Person
Carola has been careful to draw a line between fiction and reality. In her essay, she stressed that although there was a real-life inspiration, Stephen is not an exact replica.
“I’ve been so hesitant — and scared — to talk about the ‘real’ Stephen, because while there is certainly a person who inspired his character, that person isn’t actually the character,” she wrote. “And that is a distinction I need to keep intact.”
She has never publicly revealed the identity of the man who inspired Stephen. However, she described how their relationship began with “his hungry stare at a party in college” and quickly evolved into what she called an “unabashed, almost manic pursuit.”
“His approach was different than that of any guy I’d ever met, and my reaction surprised me: I became obsessed with the feeling of being wanted,” she wrote. “Even when I learned, through the grapevine, that I wasn’t the only girl.”
Carola compared the on-and-off relationship to “blood from a cut that refused to heal.”
“He kept reminding me that he was there, that he still wanted me, that he could change, that our future held limitless possibilities,” she wrote. “He itched, I scratched, blood pooled, and the cycle began again.”
