* If you listened to this weeks pod I spoke on it feeling wrong that Jo was being made fun of after learning she has ADHD/ is on the spectrum. This is another perspective
I’m a psychologist and Jo blaming her ADHD for all her strange behaviors is not accurate. It’s honestly kind of offensive to others with ADHD. It is an attention and concentration deficit. Yes hyperactivity and impulsivity can be an aspect of the disorder but those symptoms do tend to lessen with age.
I have ADHD and every time they reference it, I cringe. Like they’re trying to make it a story line, when it’s just an issue with focusing and hyperactivity.
I’ll be having a conversation with friends and move constantly, interrupt (my biggest embarrassment lol), have 5 topics going in one convo… we all laugh at me, including myself… not once am I like, I have ADHD, this is bullying. Lol! Stupid.
Yes thank you! As an elementary school teacher, ADHD does not make you do those strange behaviors. The distraction at the hair salon yes but not the other behaviors.
I agree! Thank goodness someone pointed this out.
Bad take. If you have ADHD and you are not like Jo this doesn’t mean you are “doing it right” and she is “doing it wrong”.
People are different.
Assuming this post was from actual therapist is just sad. You are not picturing yourself well, sir/ma’am
Thank you I have AdHD and what she is saying is horrible to the rest of us
ADHD and OCD can be diagnosed but can also umbrella under Asperger’s. Most girls go undiagnosed until they are adult women because they are better at masking and mimicking behaviors they see others are displaying. I think she has undiagnosed Asperger’s. Speaking from first hand knowledge I have it and her mannerisms resonated but I’ve learned to mask them in public spaces. Still think shes a bit of an asshole for the Katie and Ariana hate but she’s only learned to bond with men based on she’s awkward around other women. It would make sense why her and Rachel got along cause I think Rachel has it too. Not a doctor just speaking on my experience
I’m a licensed therapist and also have ADHD. Jo is saying people are making fun of her for having ADHD when in reality she’s just trying to deflect all criticism. The majority of the criticism isn’t even about her “quirkiness” (which isn’t ADHD anyway) but rather her behaviors around relationships and boundaries. And I see absolutely no reason to speculate that she’s on the autism spectrum, she never said it or implied it and there’s no other reason to think that.
Mental health comes in many forms, and a therapist should understand that symptoms and diagnosis are not “one size fits all.” I’m no Jo fan, but I think it’s unfair for therapists who have never treated her to discredit her diagnosis based on a few scenes from a tv show. It’s giving Anne Marie esophagus-gate..
Does her ADHD make her go after men in relationships, if so maybe Rachel has it too.
I think everyone should chill on talking about Jo. I feel horrible for her, the girls on the show were so horrible towards her minus Ally.
