If he had so much money to give away, why did he pull out a second mortgage for the bar? I suppose he pulled out much more than he was giving away but seems strange

He loves to be the hero. He gets off on how it makes him feel. It also comes in handy in times like this. Do you really think he cared about her? He made her out to be a lunatic and a liar for years and she was telling the truth. He loved the feeling of being her savior. He’s vile.
Absolutely irrelevant in the question of whether he’s a decent person or not. He’s not a decent person and also has been generous with money with some friends. Both can be true. Personally I think it’s clearly a tactic to gain or re-gain trust/friendship/loyalty/etc.

I feel like I’m reading this as “money came from his account to her, but he didn’t know about it and he didn’t send it…” I’m very confused by the end of this.
But if he did send money, this doesn’t shock me. He also paid for James to propose. He seems very willing to give “friends” financial help even if he really doesn’t have the means. But that also comes off as very manipulative like you can’t be mad at me because I helped you.
