Angela Oakley is getting candid about what has helped her marriage to Charles Oakley stand the test of time.
The “Real Housewives of Atlanta” star appeared on “Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen” on June 21, where she opened up about the couple’s relationship and the lessons they’ve learned after years together.
According to Angela, one thing has made all the difference.
Angela Oakley Says Counseling Has Strengthened Their Marriage
When Andy Cohen asked about the secret to their lasting relationship, Angela didn’t hesitate.
“You know what, we are in counseling,” she shared. “Counseling is forever.”
She added that one of the biggest lessons she’s learned is accepting that she doesn’t always have to be right.
“And my biggest takeaway is, I’m not always right. Sometimes, Charles can be right. You know, like, I hate it here,” she joked.
Charles, who was sitting in the audience, chimed in with his own take on how they navigate disagreements.
“She always thinks she’s right,” he laughed. “So I just let her go and let her have it her way ’cause arguing ain’t going to go nowhere but bad. When we start arguing, it’s going to end up bad. So I just said, ‘Hey, it’s your way.'”
Angela couldn’t resist adding one final comment.
“And I like it that way,” she joked.
The lighthearted exchange earned laughs from the audience and offered fans another glimpse into the couple’s dynamic.
Angela Previously Opened Up About Their Toughest Chapter
While the pair joked about marriage on “Watch What Happens Live,” Angela has also been open about the difficult period they experienced early in their relationship.
During an episode of “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” earlier this year, Angela revealed that she and Charles briefly lived apart after marrying.
She explained that the challenges followed Charles’ 2017 arrest after an altercation with security at Madison Square Garden. The charges were later dropped.
“I really, really, really want to do that,” Angela said while discussing the idea of renewing their vows.
“We were newly married,” she recalled. “He needed to heal, and I couldn’t heal him during this time. I was just like, ‘You know what? We’re going to try to work through this at a distance.'”
She said the couple ultimately decided to remain committed despite the difficult circumstances.
“And we did live separately,” Angela continued. “So us just recommitting to one another, I feel like is important at this moment, because everything that happened since we got married, it affected us.”
