Steve McBee Sr. is checking in from federal prison just in time for the holidays, and yes, it’s as heavy as it sounds. “The McBee Dynasty: Real American Cowboys” patriarch, 52, is currently serving a 24-month sentence after pleading guilty to one count of federal crop insurance fraud, and his son Cole McBee just shared a family update that had fans rushing to the comments.

Cole posted the message on Wednesday, Dec. 17, reading a note from his dad while standing with his fiancée, Kacie Adkison, and their 11-month-old daughter, Blair. It was a rare glimpse at how Steve Sr. is doing behind bars — and what life looks like now for the family that’s been living out loud on TV.

Prison Update: Cole McBee Says Steve McBee Sr. Is ‘Getting Used to It’

Cole kept it simple, but honest. “He’s doing alright,” he said, before adding that his dad asked him to read something to supporters. In the message, Steve Sr. offered his “sincerest thank you” to fans for their “thoughts and prayers as our family tries to navigate this life-changing situation.”

Cole also shared that his dad has fallen into a strict routine, staying busy with “classes and working at the rec center until about 8 p.m. every evening.” By the time Steve Sr. eats and showers, Cole said there’s only “about an hour before the 10 p.m. count and lights out.” Not exactly a cozy holiday schedule.

Still, Cole said his dad has something to look forward to each night: fan mail. Cole told followers that Steve Sr. can now receive letters and “does read every single letter,” adding that he “looks forward to it every single night.” Cole even posted the address for anyone who wants to write, while joking that Steve Sr.’s roommates enjoy the mail too. “He said not the private ones, though,” Cole added. “He doesn’t read those ones off.”

Cole didn’t sugarcoat the situation, either. “Obviously, he is in federal prison; it’s not great,” he said. “It ain’t like he’s living the life.” But Cole also described his dad as “very optimistic,” saying he’s taking it “one day at a time.”

The update comes after Steve Sr. self-surrendered on Dec. 1 at a federal prison in Yankton, South Dakota. A Department of Justice press release said his guilty plea served as an admission that he “engaged in fraudulent activity from 2018 to 2020” that caused an economic loss to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
