Both Eddie and Wendy Osefo have waived their right to a speedy trial.
Wendy Osefo filed a “waiver of Hicks hearing” electronically on March 4. (see below) The status conference scheduled for March 4 did not take place, likely due to that filing, and the appearance was subsequently postponed.
Eddie Osefo also filed the same waiver, and his appearance was postponed as well. Both remain on the same court schedule.
The next status conference is currently set for May 20.
In Maryland, a waiver of the Hicks Rule occurs when a defendant agrees to postpone a criminal trial beyond the mandatory 180-day deadline. By doing so, the defendant waives the right to automatic dismissal that could occur if the trial is not held within that timeframe.
These waivers are typically filed in writing or entered into the court record and are often used to allow additional time for legal preparation.
