James Van Der Beek’s family is receiving an outpouring of support following the “Dawson’s Creek” star’s death at age 48 on February 11.
A GoFundMe page created by friends of the late actor surpassed its original $500,000 goal in less than 24 hours. As of Thursday afternoon, the fundraiser had raised $1.58 million.
James, who was diagnosed with Stage 3 colorectal cancer in August 2023, is survived by his wife of 16 years, Kimberly, and their six children. According to the fundraising page, the family is currently “out of funds” and facing “an uncertain future” following his passing.
“Throughout his illness, the family faced not only emotional challenges but also significant financial strain as they did everything possible to support James and provide for his care,” the page reads. “Every donation, no matter the size, will help Kimberly and her family find hope and security as they rebuild their lives.”
Several celebrities stepped up in a major way.
Steven Spielberg, who was Dawson’s idol on “Creek,” and his wife, Kate Capshaw, donated an incredible $25,000.
Zoe Saldaña pledged $2,500 per month to support Kimberly and the children. “Wicked” director Jon M. Chu donated $10,000 under the name Jonathan Chu. Guy Oseary and Martin Blencowe each contributed $10,000 as well.
Lyn Lear, widow of “All in the Family” creator Norman Lear, pledged $5,000 per month. Julie Plec donated $5,000, and the Marla Maples Foundation also contributed $5,000. Derek Hough gave $1,000.
Busy Philipps, who starred alongside James on both “Dawson’s Creek” and “Don’t Trust the B—- In Apartment 23,” shared the fundraiser link in her tribute. “James Van Der Beek was one in a billion and he will be forever missed,” she wrote.
Jenna Dewan also directed followers to the fundraiser, writing, “All my love to Kim and the kids.”
Additional reported donors include Ricki Lake, Kaley Cuoco, Lydia Hearst, and Miranda Kerr.
