I’m so glad you are going to be covering the Hulu Mormon wives show! It’s a HOT topic here in SLC. The Mormon church released a statement yesterday basically saying these girls should not be considered Mormon because they do not worship at the highest level. Ruffling lots of feathers because the Mormon church does NOT like any media attention like this because it puts the bullseye on them and their BILLLLLIONS of dollars they have from their people. Major media storm! Gonna be juicy,

That is not what the statement from the Church said at all, lol. It was about how media tends to be sensationalized and may not fully and fairly reflect the lifestyle of the average member (which is true…most of us are not swingers 😂).
It did not even mention this show by name, because there is also a movie coming out where there’s a murderer trying to murder female Mormon missionaries. So it addresses multiple media items in the general sense.
Here is the statement:

Trying to remember if they made a statement over Sisterwives
I was raised Mormon (married in the temple, all the things) and left in my 30s, with a lawyer and everything because you can’t just “leave.” Like, once you are on the records of the church, they make nearly impossible to remove your information and basically stalk you for life…it’s very similar to Scientology! But real stories of Mormons doing scandalous things gets out? Immediately they try to disassociate from these people publicly (real Christlike, huh?)
I have never been so disgusted with Mormon women than the way they are reacting to this show on social media.
I was raised Mormon and remain a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and have a much different view. We have NO paid ministry/leaders at all. Everyone in leadership positions typically have a regular job in addition to their church callings and our congregation tithes 10% (some do/some don’t) and these funds pay for meeting houses & temples to be built and maintained as well as funds our own welfare programs for needy members throughout the world. What Hulu’s program shows is NOT AT ALL how faithful LDS women act/believe. Women do have very important roles and leadership positions within our church as well and I have never been made to feel less than men even though women are not allowed to be priesthood holders.
I’m surprised it took the “church” this long to speak out. They defend themselves at all costs to keep their precious tax protections.
High five and hugs to you, Sally. It takes a lot to speak up and get out. While I’ve never been Mormon, it’s been a part of my life for the past 20+ years. I really wish more stories like yours would come to light. The “church” is too good at deflecting. They do a lot to teach their people that anyone who questions the “church”, even out of curiosity, is the work of the devil. It’s very hard to past that mentality.
