A surprising behind-the-scenes detail about “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” is making waves after Crystal Minkoff shared new insight into filming with Dorit Kemsley.

During an episode of her podcast “Humble Brag,” Crystal revealed that Dorit’s smoking habit was something cast members were allegedly not allowed to discuss on camera.
“Dorit smoking…Like, she just constantly smoked,” Crystal said. “But we… were not allowed to talk about it. We’re like, ‘Okay.’ And they’re like, ‘Wait, everyone pause. She’s gonna go smoke.’”
Crystal explained that the situation may have contributed to a longtime complaint about Dorit’s punctuality on the show. “That’s why I think we wait for her a lot,” she said. “She’s smoking.”
She continued, “I swear to God, that’s why, she’s smoking… I would whisper to someone like, ‘Why are we…’ and they’d be like, ‘No, no, no, just don’t talk about it. No one knows she smokes.’ I’m like, ‘Okay, except all 400 people here.’”
Fans first saw Dorit smoking on camera during the season 14 premiere of “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills,” though paparazzi photos had previously hinted at the habit.
Dorit later addressed the moment in an interview with British Vogue, explaining the mindset behind it. “I remember the headspace I was in,” she said. “I was coming out of such a dark time… And then I was just like… (expletive) it.”
She added, “Seeing the I don’t give a (expletive). I really learnt to appreciate the humor and also the power.”
Dorit also shared that she no longer worries about how she comes across on screen. “I reached a point where I didn’t give a (expletive). It’s the best way to do a show like this,” she said.

Dorit smoking in her car quickly went viral, which came as headlines about her separation from Paul “PK” Kemsley surfaced.
During a 2024 appearance on “Watch What Happens Live” host Andy Cohen asked, “Was that the first time we’ve seen you smoking on this show?”
“Yeah,” Dorit responded.
“That was the most iconic scene ever,” guest Lala Kent added. “Flying down the Canyon in a G-Wagon.”
Dorit then revealed what was happening behind the scenes. “You know what? I was actually being chased by paparazzi,” she said. “Yeah, so, I was like, ‘Oh, my God. Oh, my God.’ You couldn’t tell that.”
“That canyon’s no joke,” Lala added. “I was impressed.”
The moment aired around the same time Dorit and PK confirmed their separation in May 2024.
“We as a couple have been subject to a lot of speculation about our marriage. We have had our struggles over the last few years and continue to work through them as two people who love each other and share two amazing children together,” they said in a joint Instagram statement. “To safeguard our deep friendship and maintain a harmonious environment for our children we have made the mutual and difficult decision to take some time apart and reevaluate our relationship while we prioritize our children…”
